Kimpetbrivl

When friends of ours were expecting their first child, they asked me to design a kimpetbrivl, which is a traditional Eastern European amulet for birthing mothers.  Also known as a shirhamaalosl, from the traditional psalm 121 included on these amulets (in Hebrew, the psalm starts with shir lama’alos, “a song of ascents,” this design incorporates psalm 121, as well as the names of the patriarchs and matriarch and various other traditional elements intended to protect the newborn child and their mother.

My design incorporates a crown – the “crown of a good name,” as well as traditional symbols from Eastern European Jewish papercuts, such as lions golden peacocks, and a menorah.
